My son is in MCPS and took AlgII in 8th. He's taking H. Stats this year. He'll take AP stats after BC. He's a math kid and just wanted an additional math class.

I agree with the previous posters, use the extra elective slot for AP science prerequisites or AP Computer science and take AP statistics after Calculus.

Kids on that path don't take statistics in 9th grade.

Only TJ has stats in 9th, because they split up AP Stats into 2 semesters so kids can split it across multiple years as an extra math class.

At MCPS STEM Magnet, everyone skips that first semester and takes AP+enriched Stats junior year, for 1 semester only, after calculus.

Non-magnet students on OP hyper-advanced math track should take AP stats after calculus, and before/during (optional) research project/internship, so they can self-study calculus-based justifications to fill in the math missing from AP Stats.

Why do this instead of something more useful like double science/CS to unblock access to AP/upper level science?

There aren't 3 years of sequential classes that depend on Stats.

He would be doubling with AP Pre-calc BC. Chances of getting into TJ from his middle school are very minimal with so many well qualified students applying. His middle school has 2 full classes of Algebra II students and TJ doesn't even look at which math classes that students are taking as part of admissions anymore.

Other than TJ, no other fcps high school allows 9th graders to take AP stat.

My son took Statistics after Algebra 2. In retrospect, it’s not a good idea, much better to take it after Calculus. I’m sure some people will jump in and say AP statistics is algebra based, but to really understand the fundamentals you need calculus, otherwise the entire course is a mechanical application of formulas.

There are also some concepts covered in precalculus for binomial distributions, combinations and permutations, inverse functions etc.

The AP exam is challenging, it isn’t easy to get a 5, you need to know the material well. In a sense AP Statistics is harder than AP Calculus because it requires a deeper knowledge of material, while most of calculus theorems are straightforward to derive, interpret and apply.

Another point, good statistics teachers are very rare, the one my son had was abysmal, would literally ask for a conclusion in a very specific rote memorization format, all while she never defined in the course what a probability distribution is.

It’s possible to take AP Stat in 9th but not advisable.

The mandatory course in freshman first semester is RS1 - Research Statistics 1, which is just a very basic intro to Statistics. Although not common, very few freshman use the elective slot, and take RS2 in spring semester. RS2 is AP Statistics. Majority of other students take RS2 in sophomore or senior year.
