This was my experience as well. Been to Italy twice, passed on Pisa both times and instead opted for Florence. That was the right decision for us.


Skip pisa. It’s just the tower - not a thing more.

I would not suggest Florence because you’re going to spend the majority of your day on the train back-and-forth… Unless you don’t literally mean a day trip all within one day. Way too much to see in Florence for just a few hours.

Napes to get to Pompeii. Easy day trip with a guide for Pompeii and Herculaneum, enough time to get pizza in Naples for the train back.

Florence is a little further and frankly is worth more time than a day trip.

We did Pompeii as a day trip taking the fast train to Naples—could have easily combined it with a half day in Naples to see the museum or do a food walking tour or something.

Ostia Antica was recommended and looks like a nice day trip with a cute town nearby.

Pisa seems far for a day trip. Wouldn’t you need to take a train through Florence?

Orvieto is a nice, easy one. Gorgeous cathedral and a charming little square to have lunch.

Pisa is nice, too. Florence is a lot for a day trip. You'd have to be very focused. Much better as an overnight.
