I'm a guy and was in my 30s when I got married for the first time. It never occurred to me that I was supposed to ask anybody for permission or a blessing. I learned of this rule in our second or third year of marriage when we saw it in a movie or TV show. We had a laugh.

It's not that I disagreed with the "rule." It's that I had never heard of it or knew anyone who had done it.

DH asked for my parents blessing. I didn't even know he was going to propose or that he talked to my parents. It was very traditional.
