For PK3-PK4, there’s also the Appletree in Spring Valley

When are you moving? You'll need proof of residency by May 1.

The OP said she has family and friends in upper NW and that she is leaning that way -- I don't see any reason not to do that. Her middle and high school pathways are set, then. Just find a solution for PK3 (likely communikids) and then be set for the next 14 years.

There are many elementary schools around the city that are quite good and not in upper NW (including John Lewis and others the PP mentioned), but middle and high school is an issue (we are living this, though got a spot at a good charter middle so it "worked" though it was profoundly stressful at points). If OP already has a social life in upper NW, just hit the easy button.

You need to study this chart really well - https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/aaron2446/viz/MSDCSeatsandWaitlistOfferData_draft/MSDCPublicDisplay

Many of the "best" schools don't offer PK3 at all, many of the best bilingual schools favor spanish speaking kids in prek3 AND prek4 (oyster, bancroft). Are you looking for a more suburban life and willing to drive your kid each day, or do you want a more walkable neighborhood and want to walk your kid 10 min to school? Do you want spanish? If not, look at Shaw neighborhood - Garrison, Seaton, or Adams Morgan - HD Cooke, Marie Reed. Careful with boundaries - Ross elementary between those two neighborhoods doesn't offer Prek3.

Thanks a lot for your input everyone! Someone mentioned John Lewis ES that is on the other side of the park. I am looking into it but any advice is more than welcome!

Steven’s ELC in Downtown is not tied to a specific boundary if I remember correctly and is exclusively a PK3/4 school. You’d still need to figure out your plan/in bounds for elementary school though?

We’re preparing to move to Washington, DC, and will be applying for the Pre-K3 lottery for our child. Since we don’t yet have a specific neighborhood locked down, we’re hoping to get some advice on where the best schools are and how that might influence where we choose to live.

We’re currently leaning toward Northwest DC since we have family and friends that live in that area but are open to other suggestions if it means better school options or a smoother lottery process.

We have also heard from Communikids and they mentioned if we register our child this semester then we can bypass the lottery for next year.

Any insights or tips on navigating the lottery system and selecting neighborhoods would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much for your help!

If you plan to live in NW, communikids is an excellent option for this year, and then may be able to get a spot at your in bound school for PK4. Many NW schools don't have PK3.

Many schools in Northwest don't offer PK3 at all. Be sure you're keeping track of that.
