UVA engineering is #35. Hardly “prestigious.”

To me this is a toss up and should come down to what school your kid likes in general. I would much rather list myself as an engineering graduate from Georgia Tech on my resume than UVA, but UVA is clearly a strong school and would probably offer stronger opportunities across a wider variety of subjects should engineering ultimately not be your kid's jam.

Engineering at UVA is basically an afterthought.

Both are great and will get you where you want to go. We are talking top in the country. Get accepted to both, visit each. I guarantee by the end of the visits your child will have a preference!

US News rankings are meaningless, especially for Engineering.

GT is a much larger E School. It will have more course options for upper level in major electives. Its faculty focus primarily on high end research. Look into their graduation rate to see if they deliberately "weed out" students.

UVa is a MUCh smaller E School. Fewer upper level in-major elective choices and many courses are either fall-only or spring-only. Everyone is a name, not a number. Courses are taught by faculty and faculty really are accessible to undergrads. Everyone UVa E School admits should be able to graduate and a high percentage do so in 4 years. No deliberate "weed out" courses.

Any ABET accredited E school will be rigorous and hard work for all students.

These are VERY different options. Pick the one which best fits your DC.

GT is not better academically than caltech. Total BS. Usnews is not a ranking academic quality. It used to be, more or less looking at tiers not exact rank, but now they have schools with very average students ranked in the T30. Grad rankings have similar flaws. Use the QS plus US news 30yr average rankings from 1993-2023 and it is clear how schools rank in academics

They're such dramatically different environments that I have to imagine a kid would have a strong preference for one over the other.

Decisions come out tonight, so maybe just see if both wind up saying yes.

Which one?

Would IS or OS make a difference?
