I've been to Riviera Maya a few times and we were never able to swim or go in the water. We would just take the shuttle to a sister hotel in the hotel zone and enjoy the beach/turquoise water there for a day .. or during a day trip to the islands

Is it still a problem? Considering a trip in mid-March to one of the Mayakoba resorts.
