If you google, Special Needs Alliance, at https://www.specialneedsalliance.org/ you see that it is a comprehensive website that provides a lot of informaiton on future planning for an individual with a disability. However, there is a free online newsletter, The Voice, which has information at time that is applicable to many situations if you are carng for someone. The newsletter that I just got, has a comprehensive article on the ways a Care Manager can help one in numerous ways. Now, of course, one needs to be able to pay for one, but the article might help one clarify the services that they would want such a person to provide. There are resources, too, on lawyers.

I read the the article above about Social Security, and we have certainly benefitted for our daughter who resides with us as when my husband retired, she qualified to receive half of his Social Security monthly payment or for her Social Security Disability Insurance - not impacting what he receives at all - and after two years became eligible for full Medicare. She actually has Social Security on her own work record as she has held a part-time job for 20 years with the same employer. Due to her limited income, her secondary insurance is Medicaid. Knowing that she was not insurable for LTC coverage, we got it many years ago in our late 50s. If they go after Medicaid, we could get her a Medicare Supplement which would provide the difference in what Medicare does not cover.

Medicaid for a person with a disability also beyond health insurance coverage can through what is called Developmental Disability Medicaid Waivers provide funding for one to go to an adult day program once public education ends if one is unable to work. Also, there are some waivers that provide for in-home direct personal assistance with personal care and for others support in mastering Activities of Daily Living. For those with disabilities, Medicaid would also be the funding agent for long term health care. For those individuals who have no parents living or family support, this would be the funding agent for a group home or other congregate living situation (nursing home).
