Rough transition. Kid was clearly bright enough to be there but had never had to study before. Hadn’t had homework since fifth grade either, so it was definitely an adjustment. He built a lot of study skills quickly and is thriving now, but it definitely felt like building an airplane while flying it for a bit there.

Kids from stronger middle schools didn’t flail as much, though of course moving to high school is always a transition.

The vast majority of magnet kids come from higher SES households. The whole point of the lottery was to shift that dynamic and get more poor kids who might not have the assistance or resources to be competitive. It used to be so monopolized by the affluent areas that the county had to guarantee anchored spots for TP middle to get local representation in the pipeline who had historically had not been as competitive with the required avgs for selection.

If we are being honest it is child specific but we don’t know how the new selection criteria will affect completion or test averages. That said most magnets are in poorer and diverse areas so the school makeup should feel familiar if coming from a lower ranked middle

Nope, not at all. Nice try though.
It was never monopolize by "the affluent areas", in fact "affluent areas " people used to claim discrimination against them.
TPMS got 25 set-aside seats to keep the program there when the school threatened not to host the program.

Kid from Rocky Hill Middle here,

The school is not typically known for good things, but some students do spectacularly.

I got into all the criteria based options available to me.

The lottery does not apply to Blair magnet admissions.

OP, if your kid got into the Blair magnet, then they are qualified to be there and will do fine

I would think that this is almost every kid in Blair magnet. They are smart kids and are fine.

If your students transitioned from a low performing ES/MS to a magnet HS, how did it go?
