It has nothing to do with the cut-off date. It has everything to do with favoritism and nepotism when the coach has the final say. There is no solid evidence that player A is better than player B, other than "the coach says so."

Honestly, if they have that many at tryouts for only one team, there’s a pretty good chance half the team is decided before tryouts even happen.
Do not give up on team sports because your kid gets cut at age 8. Keep practicing and playing in whatever league is available.
