The answer depends which MS your kid will attend

In school, they don't learn much. They learn the same thing over and over again while other kids are advanced learning privately or outside of school. those seems to shine better than the regular school kids.

What bugs me, and they don't tell you this in elementary school when they track people for math, is that the science path they put you in in 9th grade depends on your math class. I realize that they need a certain amount of math for some of the science, but it affects what your cohort will be, and what classes you take to fulfill the science requirement.

Not op, can you tell me more about it. I have a 3rd grader who is strong in math, 242 in winter MAP math. We have not done any enrichment. I hear about kids have to pick classes and electives starting at 6th grade., but I don't understand how the system works. I have checked the websites, but I still get confused. I think he will go down science/math path because he is strong in math and logic comprehension. I never attend schools in MCPS, so I have no ideas.

You do not need to figure out MS math or electives as a third grade parent. Don’t let this board stress you about that. If you want to know more about the MS math courses info is on the MCPS website. For now focus on 4th and 5th grade. Your ES teacher can tell you about those math pathways.

As for science, while there is some connection between science and math, this is not a problem most students encounter.

Definitely agree with the observation that the 4th grade math class in ES has long lasting effects in courses selection in MS and HS

After having 2 kids in ES/MS in MCPS, i finally recognized that whether the kids can get in Math 4/5 in 4th grade is so important. It means the 3rd grade MAP-M test in winter and spring are extremely important.

And no one will tell you that cascading effects!

Imo do 6+.

He took the 2-5 test.
He doesn’t sound like he would be prepared to handle the contents of 7+. It’s not a good idea to put a kid in a fast moving accelerated class not having mastered foundational concepts. In my son’s 5/6 class, there are a handful of struggling kids who really should switch to 5. Have to be realistic.

Our son got 215 in winter 3rd grade. District grade level mean score was 195. So in 4th grade, he was put in accelerated, doing years 4 and partly 5 in 4th grade, and years 5 and 6 in 5th grade. In 6th grade he was recommended for 7th grade math. (There was a higher level, but they didn't recommend it for him.) And I don't know what they do if parents question the level they are put in in 6th grade. We really only picked an elective. And there are technical electives.
So anyway in 9th, he will be in honors geometry.

The science section of this Blair website has a doc that shows the pathways based on math class:

Just make sure you get math workbooks at home and maybe a tutor too, to make sure your kid is actually solid on all the material they need to know before Algebra. Grades and the tests do not tell you that (as we learned the hard way when we moved to a place that does not skip and accelerate).
