My parents love their continuing care home. It took watching my father in law scramble after MIL died unexpectedly -- he had trouble getting in somewhere because of his physical mobility problems. My parents have previously been of the "we're here at home until we die" school. I am SO GLAD they agreed to move. They have friends, a community, activities, easy opportunities for exercise and meals when they want them. It makes me mad when people are close-minded and opinionated about continuing care.

My cousin felt so guilty putting my uncle into Memory Care before he was really far gone. I kept telling her all the reasons it's a great choice and if she waits too long he will only be a candidate for a nursing home. Well one month in she said it was so much fun visiting him. He was joining sing-a-longs. He ate lunch with a nice group the director got him together with and they laughed and told stories. (She said often it's the same stories, but nobody notices . It was such a relief for her to see him animated and engaging even though the type of interaction was much different than before he declined.

I will say it’s a pipe dream to get my ILs to move to AL or ever leave their longtime home. Apparently they’ve made a pact - neither will ever “put” the other in an AL community of any sort. Sad because my MIL has a significant
cognitive decline and FIL thinks he can DIY her care … and plans to. Our hands are tied.

OP I’m really happy to hear this. Trying to prepare my mom for similar. I have a hope that she’ll be more engaged than she is in her current home, which no longer works well and where she’s become a bit of a recluse.

When I read posts like this I always think of the John Knowles quote from that book we all read somewhere around ninth grade:

My ILs moved into AL a month ago, not really wanting to. My MIL just called to say she's sorry she didn't call yesterday, but they have too many activities. So there is hope! (FIL still hates it, but hating being at home too.)
