You might want to reconsider taking the job even if you can start, OP. I realize DOGE wins if you don't take the job, but consider your sanity.

Here's a different hiring freeze question -- we had an internal position open in my office that was not posted on USAjobs. It wasn't posted on any website. Our chief just emailed the office about it. The only people eligible for it are people who are already in my office. So no one was being "hired" for the position, but it's still an "open position" on Jan. 20. I think we won't be able to fill it. Is that what you think too?

But also since you’ll be in a probationary period you may want to consider continuing to look for a different job.

At my agency last time people who had start dates after the freeze had their offers rescinded. From comments above it sounds like it might not have to be that way. I’m hoping for the best for you, OP!

You have to wait for the OPM guidance, which will probably be issued this week. If it is the same as in 2017, you should be OK.

What about people through clearance?

This was the same language used in 2017, and at that time people who had accepted a final offer and had a entry on duty date were still allowed to start work.

ie, the position isn't vacant because the person is hired, they just haven't started yet.
