I would encourage attending UGA- I think it was just voted the happiest college in America. I know several top students who went there and had amazing internships and opportunities.

80%+ of top Atlanta prep school grads attend college OOS. At least if you look at Lovett and a couple others.

I can see a kid not wanting GA Tech or Emory because they are in the same city…maybe UGA is also too close?

It’s a much higher %age than I would expect and could be instructive.

Does she have to make a decision now before she knows all her options? She needs to consider which school environment does she believe would best prepare her for med school and if she changed her mind about med school, which would give her the best options. If UGA looks like a contender she should visit during one of the earlier admitted student days and wait to make a decision until she knows what are the other options. Logistically speaking, it’s tough to visit lots of colleges after RD comes out - maybe 2-3 at most iso it’s easier if you have a strong EA acceptance to attend the admitted student day and then you have a clear idea of what RD acceptance would need to be to be better than the EA front runner in terms of the criteria being used to decide.

They are not.

Georgia resident. UGA is great. Very enthusiastic alumni network, happy students/parents/alums, and good outcomes. I’m surrounded by UGA alumna who are successful in a variety of fields- medicine, law, finance, etc. UGA also offers majors/programs that you might not find at smaller privates (risk management, pharmacy, etc.). Honors program is top notch.

I think this is a great option, particularly if intending to go to medical school, which is also very expensive. Georgia is a terrific school for undergrad. Really solid academically. Athens is one of the best college towns in the country. And Georgia is a happy school, which is important. Plus the students in the honors college are going to be a bright bunch. It'll be a good peer group - not much different than Duke students except a little more middle class. I think this is a nice path to medical school.

Only 20% out of state and it’s definitely southern, Greek heavy. Those were the only 2 negatives we found. My daughter was deferred but is a top choice….long shot for her in RD but great school.

They can be for people with very specific hoped for outcomes in terms of employers and location (location probably more relevant for BC vs the others).

Probably not for premed.

Not really…but I guess you should ask if the decision is different if your DD decides to drop pre med.

The majority of kids do decide against med school (who thought that way as freshmen) in the end.

She was accepted to UGA with merit aid (making her in-state although we live in Maryland) honors college, etc. All in it will cost $28k/year.
I know little about UGA but just watched a video on Athens.
It looks like an amazing college town.
Her current plan is to go to medical school. Any reason to not attend?
