DCUm parents are getting consultants for 9th grade course selection now?!!! Bwahahaha

Normal parents don’t make this a thing. There’s a point when it’s just too much and this is it.

Through 9th grade course selection? Don't consultants typically map out all 4 years?

He can retake Spanish 3. Minimum for solid college entry, I’d say to take 3 and 4 in high school to ensure he has two years IN high school. For highly competitive colleges, I would go through AP (3,4,5,AP or 4,5,AP, depending on whether you think he needs to repeat 3). Stopping after 5 is pretty decent though, too, outside T25 or if he has a real strength elsewhere like in STEM.

There's a process for that too? Or automatic removal by counselor?

You cannot have the grades removed from the transcript. But they are automatically removed from being calculated in the GPA, if they would lower the average.

I didn’t load him up on anything in MS. Honors Spanish, Hon English is the default & only option at his middle school.

Yes you can repeat 3

Only As in honors classes go on transcript.

False. As a PP stated, all HS credit in MS grades appear on the HS transcripts. But they are excluded from WGPA calculations if they would hurt the average.

I think for question 2, maybe OP was asking this because at least some high schools say that students should take no more than 1 AP class freshman year, to not stress them out. My understanding is that AP CS Principles is very easy and not a true AP class and I'll choose both that and AP US Hist for my kid. If they say he can't do that I'll complain then, but I'm assuming that many parents will make the same choice.

Usually not a lottery, but electives may conflict schedule.

That's a bunch of questions -- #2 is school-dependent, so can't help you there - but probably if the class is offered to FR they have spaces.

#1: Depends on college goals. There's a LOT of debate on the college board, if you want to read more.
#3: All of the high school level classes appear on the transcript, but they only count in the GPA if it helps.

Hi,

DS is in the process of selecting classes for 9th grade. I've some questions :

1. How many more years of foreign language to take since he's already had Hon Spanish 1-3 in middle school and has technically met the graduation requirement. Do kids skip foreign language altogether and take other courses instead ?
If this is not advisable, can he retake Spanish 3 as freshman, Spanish 4 as sophomore and stop after that ?

2. He has 2 AP classes to select from (AP Comp Sci and AP History). Does everyone who picks one gets into the AP class of their choice or is it lottery based?

3. Which middle school grades show up on high school transcript ?

Thanks for you input.
