My bucket list is visiting the berggastgaus aescher so I’d have to give that up.

I spent the last two weeks of August in Switzerland last year. Weather was almost uniformly wonderful. Our first day was rainy/misty but it meant when we arrived in the Berner Oberland, the whole region had a magical cloudy quality to it. Afterwards it only rained once.

I think September would be a great time to go. It could be busy at key sights close to the valley floors and with easy access, but we were mainly hiking and while most of the huts were full, the trails never felt crowded. I also did notice that mountain huts start shutting down end of September early October?

As for Appenzell, we went there after the Berner Oberland for another three days of hiking. It's certainly pretty but I would not rank it as impressive as the Berner Oberland. I found the valley more interesting than seeing more not quite so tall mountains as it has an interesting topography of sharply rolling hills that are more like large mounds one after another.

We have a hotel booked w breakfast and will only eat out at night. I’ll bring power bars and the like w us. We’re not foodies but good to know.

We did lovely hikes from Wengen, went up Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch, and swam in the lakes below. Restaurants were expensive and food average in Wengen.

A few years ago, we stayed in Wengen. It was a great base. Are you travelling with children and, if so, what ages?

No just my husband and me. We’re late 50s, serious hikers.

Land in Geneva, hop on a train to Montreux upon arrival. Spend a night or two in Montreux, take a day trip to Basel. Then head to Zermatt for a minimum of three nights. Then off to Luzern,, spend at least three nights, taking the steam boat out on the lake for day trips. We did this a few years ago, all by train. Head out in the AM by train to ZRH for flight back to US.

Has anyone gone this time of year? Hoping for less crowds but still good weather.
Will be training only and this will be a first for us as we drove elsewhere when traveling in Europe.
Anyone have a not miss place? We'll have 9 days, arriving Geneva, leaving from Zurich.
