There are fights at every MS and HS. There are kids doing well at every MS and HS. So this is really about whether your student wants to attend the magnet program.

There were definitely fights there, but there have been fights at our home middle school too. My child was annoyed by the fighting, but had no trouble avoiding it. A security guard was injured breaking up a fight, but my child was never afraid of being jumped or anything. It wasn’t generally the magnet kids involved in fights.

Thank you! I tried searching but not much information like you said compared to other programs. Most reviews online outside of forums mention many fights at the school. Can anyone speak to the safety aspect?

If you're thinking the really long, detailed explanations in the other threads are from MCPS personnel, they aren't. They're from me (anon, I know!), and I'm just a parent who's tracked this stuff for a number of years.

Does your kid value things like reading more challenging material; honing writing skills; learning video production; projects that require critical thinking, researching primary sources, and partnering with others; and accelerated world language classes? Those are the things that make the bus ride worthwhile. If your child is likely to end up at Poolesville for high school, they’ll already have a lot of friends there if they’ve attended MLK.

Yes and no. You know best what your kid can handle. Can they handle hours long to and from in addition to any extra curricular activities and sleeping at a reasonable hour/wake up on time?

Any recent experience with Martin Luther King middle school magnet program? Or the school overall?
Is it worth the hour long bus rides to and from?
