The photo above of the fencing around the Capitol says it all. And it's just one example of how much security/fencing/etc. there is. Lots. There's security for all inaugurations but friends on the Hill tell me this just feels like more.

Note that this morning, it was announced that the inauguration ceremony has been moved indoors. I guess maybe there will be screens broadcasting the ceremony as it happens inside the Capitol building, but why stand on the Mall in what is predicted to be coldest weather ever on any inauguration day, just to watch a screen?

The temperature in DC on Monday will not go above a high of 25 degrees and likely, the air will feel colder than that. I guess the parade is going ahead, but won't be surprised if crowds thin out quickly due to the temperatures.

We happened to be staying with friends who lived in Fairfax for GWB's first inauguration. Decided to go in at the last minute.

Don't think that I need to go to another regardless of the winner. I was a young adult at the time - thought the folks that turned their back to Bush when he gave his address were interesting. Weather was pretty miserable IIRC.

Probably enjoyed walking around and going to the museums and such much more than the event itself.

Nope. Trump's first inaguration had protests, but the Women's March was pretty gentle and I don't think there were arrests. Same with the GWB inauguarations. There was litter, but any big event in DC has that (go to the Mall any July 5th; it's gross). And it was the leadup to Biden's inauguaration that had pipe bombs and the invasion of the Capitol.

It's true that the general vibes of people who live in DC are happier when it's a Democrat elected--it's mostly a Democratic city--but there are always people who come to town who are excited.

Like July 4th only unhappy, lol. I won't wait for a port a potty to see concerts or fireworks and I won't do it for an Inauguration either.

Also, we went to the American Indian museum with kids for the play area. As we left I warmed up my car from the app and within like 5-10min there were 4 USCP officers surrounding my car. They were polite when I explained the situation (I'm sure it didn't hurt that it's a lux family SUV versus a beat-up pickup with slogans spraypainted on the side) but they're not messing around.
