It is getting better because it is harder to get into Walls.

When it used to be a test - BASIS students were all in play for being selected for the interview.
Now that the test is removed, not everyone from BASIS who wants to move makes the cut.

People do, especially if BASIS is a better commute than JR. Back before MacArthur, some people were zoned for JR but didn't live very close to it.

I suspect more would consider if those charters started at 6th. We’re IB for Deal and put our 4th grader in the lottery this year. If they get in to Latin or maybe Basis, we’ll take a look. But it would be nice if we were deciding between charter and Deal vs. charter and last year at elementary school.

Yes, some do; I know families IB for Deal at all three charters. But it’s not common. It’s very different from the situation on the Hill where it seems pretty typical for IB families to lottery for Latin/Basis in 4th.

We are one of those families. Kids need different things as they develop and we were fortunate to have the option through the lottery. We prefer the community, ethos and academics to our by right pathway. And our kids are significantly happier than they were at our elementary. It’s an individual decision—we have plenty of friends from elementary who are happy at Deal and JR.

Sure, there are plenty of BASIS DC students zoned for Deal/JR.

It's on this spreadsheet. The answer is yes, I know a few myself who are IB for JR but go to Latin 2nd. I think they started at Latin, and then wanted to move near Latin and ended up with a house that was JR-zoned just because they liked the house.

Yes, you can see maps of the inbounds schools of different charters...I forget where but probably the dcpcsb website or the osse one for the boundary and feeder pattern review project. But the answer is yes that some people who live ib for deal send their kids elsewhere, including but not limited to basis and Latin.

I don’t know about Latin/Basis but I do know there are Deal families at DCI.

Why is it important to know this now? Will it inform a decision you’re making about where to live?

If you’re already in the Deal/JR feeder pattern, just sit tight and enjoy elementary school. You’ll know a lot more about your kid and what sort of environment they’ll thrive in when they’re in 3rd or 4th grade.
