Yes, TONS of politics. Be aware.

They have decent players, yet they lack good coaches with experience at that level or the required credentials. Hence, the deep struggles mentioned before across all ages (with the exception of 08s).

Give it a try and attend one of their practices.

As PPs have said, it depends on what is important for your kid.

DS tried out for Alexandra and got an offer. We felt the coach really wanted DS and would have gotten a lot of playing time immediately. We ultimately declined bc we did not think it had enough of an intensity in their practices, as run or as fueled by the kids. Compared to the other MLSNext teams, we didn’t think the technical skill overall was as high.

But take that with a grain of salt bc it was one team and one coach. But I don’t doubt there are lots of amazing players there notwithstanding what other PPs say about the teams not winning. It’s about your kid and what environment works for them, not the team.

My son plays for Alexandria MLS Next. It's a good club with lots of teams and good coaches. He's been with them for about 4 years and we've been happy.

I don't have direct experience with the other nearby MLS Next clubs (SYC and Bethesda) other than playing against them.

Bethesda also seems like a solid club, but distance-wise it wasn't even an option for us.

Over the years, I have seen bad behavior from SYC coaches even at U-little ages (screaming, aggressive intentional fouls, etc.) which turned me off from them years ago; their parent behavior on the sidelines over the years has only reinforced that bad impression. That said, SYC is certainly more successful racking up the wins in several age groups, so it depends on what's most important to you, I guess.

ASA is very lowkey. They believe in developing players over wins.

Friends...my fellow grumpy friends. I'm new here and will be moving to the area in the summer. I have a son who plays MLS Next already, so we are scoping out the scene.

Any feedback on ASA from folks who have experienced it? I see SYC is next door and found more about them online than ASA. Any feedback would be great!
