People are perfectly fine to sit next to a 10 yr old. Your 10 yr old will be ok too. If not, maybe the next flight can accommodate your seat request.

But it's not on other random passengers to fix it for you. It's a few hours, just sit down so the flight will leave on time. You will all be ok. It's the risk of flight travel.

Because the airlines don't let you select seats anymore unless you pay for them. And people don't want to pay for them. That's why. This is pretty clear.

I know it's rude of people to pressure other to give up their seat, and it annoys me as well given that I always pay extra to select a good seat. But this is a ramification of the direction the airlines have chosen to go with regard to seat selection and making it a part of how they nickel and dime us. Airline travel is awful, you have to either pay for first class or accept that there are going to be a lot of annoyances and people pushing you to give up the window seat you paid for so that little Larla can sit there is going to be one of them.

The last two times my family wasn’t seated together it was because the airline changed the aircraft after we’d booked the tickets.
We’d done our part and paid for seats together and the gate agent was able to move us around.
Sometimes the outrage over “people were too cheap” just isn’t warranted.

I don't mind as long as it is a switch to an aisle and in the same section of the plane. Sometimes a flight gets cancelled and you have to take whatever is left and that can mean separating couples and families that bought tickets together on the previous flight.

Don’t be a grinch.

A lot of people aren't willing to pay the extra fees when they book to choose their seats. Families mistakenly believe the airline will seat them together. I am a parent; if I can't afford to pay the fees to select my seat so my child sits next to me, I'm not going. I don't understand why your lack of planning should become my issue. Yes, I get the argument to have a little compassion, but I have seen too many parents get upset when they didn't pay to pick seats and the airline split them up from their children.

I flew Iceland Air with my spouse and our 4yo. They assigned us 2 seats in the emergency row and one in the back. Then when I sat with the 4yo they said she wasn’t allowed in the emergency row. I’m certainly not having my 4yo sit alone that far away from us. Luckily some complete strangers said they would switch with us.

I’ve switched a row with someone and ordered a vegetarian meal. When they brought the meal to my original seat the person said, “ she’s in the seat behind me” they gave it to me. Took 5 extra seconds if that.

I don’t think you should give up a window or aisle seat for a middle if you paid for it. But any other scenario. Just be kind.

I fly once a month and the last time I was asked to switch seats was 3 years ago. And weirdly enough it was a guy offering his business class seat (domestic really just a bigger seat) to me because his wife had got a standby seat next to me at the last minute and he wanted to sit with her. The flight attendant was a little annoyed that we had to switch after everyone boarded and told the man next time to this at the counter

I've seen people saying their flights got changed and they ended up with seats they didn't pick. But I also see people decline to change ALL THE TIME.

Because they don't want to shell out the money to pick their seats ahead of time.

No. I will not change my seat because you want to sit next your spouse or kids. It isn't my problem you can't sit together.

I also booked special meals I picked or the flight, so get it through your stupidly thick skulls that even if we switched seats, it causes even more problems when people have pre-specified meal picks. And no, I'd never, ever in a million years give up my aisle or window seat for a worse middle seat.

Why do so many morons insist with sitting next to family members if they can't book next to each other? It's a flight. They're not going anywhere and you'll be fine for a few hours. Requesters for switching seats cause so many stupidly awkward situations and can cause even more problems when other passengers may have specific meals or bought items on shops they have to locate your seat in order to deliver to you. Just sit in your own damn seat people and shut up.
