Take credits at MC and they guarantee transfer to UMD and are most likely transferable to other institutions, upon review. Although you don’t need the credit for MCPS, I think you still have to enroll through dual enrollment because your student isn’t a high school graduate. Good news is that dual enrollment courses are paid for by MCPS. Talk with the dual enrollment counselor at your high school.

MCPS does not pay for summer DE classes. But I agree you will still need to go through the MCPS DE office to enroll.

If your kid likes learning so much, they don't need to worry about chasing extra college elective credits.

I agree with the PP that transferability will vary by school. The more selective the school the less likely they will accept these types of transfer credits.

Not through MCPS. Summer classes for languages are for remediation, typically only level 1 and 2.

OP here - interested in taking summer classes for college credit to explore their other interests. Not for MCPS credit.

Also in the foreign language exploration for High School not college credit. My son does not want to take Spanish during the year because
he wants to do other classes so thought a summer class would be good. Wondering if MCPS accepts this.

When I was in high school I took psychology and econ at my county’s college and got credit for both. My mom encouraged me to take harder classes that I might find difficult at the county level because I wouldn’t have to worry about the grade—they go as pass fail I think. Most colleges publish a list of acceptable transfer credits I think. I would assume the better the college the fewer they accept.

As an adult I took a spanish class one summer and it was extremely compact and not helpful in acquiring the language. So if the plan is to continue I wouldn’t recommend it but if it’s just for 3 credits and to check a box go for it!

Is your priority getting college credit or credit from MCPS for the class? Like are you trying to do health for MCPS with a summer college class or are you trying to take a college class to further explore an interest that goes beyond what MCPS offers?

Has anyone done this for their MCPS HS student? What are the best programs - Montgomery College, UMBC? Are these credits easily transferred to colleges for freshman year? New to this, thanks for any and all advice !
