I think this board is often way too eager to see people get in trouble but yeah if the top HS in the city, or any HS really, rushed into the musical and didn't secure the rights then that's a big deal. Those students were counting on that for both their own development and college applications.

Two schools in the area can do the same show. Professional productions are the only way you can not get rights or if they are restricting it bc they are rewriting things etc.

Wow...Never knew it was really big deal for a high school to get rights. I understand if it was a theater that was profiting...sad.

Same thing happened at another ES but they didn’t have the auditions yet.

The issue is usually that School A wants to do a popular school show like The Little Mermaid, Jr. but Middle School B across town is already doing it, so School A can't get the rights. Having to change shows happens a lot, but usually the director figures it out before auditions.

The organizers were too confident or too rushed, OP. It happens, but it sucks when it does.

They didn't get the rights to the musical, and did the auditions while they thought the paperwork was going through, and then they were turned down. Perhaps because another school in the area had already obtained rights to the same show. It came close to happening at the school where I teach this year, but they heard that the rights were coming just in time to delay auditions and find another show.

They should have made the decision and applied for rights earlier so they had a chance to look for a second show, but mistakes happen.
