Crossfield is fine (the PTO is terrible, but I think that's most PTOs in the entire regions), Carson is great, and while we haven't made it to Oakton yet, everyone we know with kids there has had really good things to say. Yes, the commute is tough, but everyone manages just fine. I'm not worried about boundaries for Crossfield. There is really nowhere else to send these kids other than Oakton.

Don’t some Crossfield/Carson kids go to South Lakes? Oakton is further away than SL so who knows what they’re going to do.

We live in the Oak Hill area and like the location. You can get to a lot of things without it being too painful. I find Ashburn to be more soulless. The data centers are a real eyesore. You’re also stuck further out on one end of the larger metro area. Oak Hill is nice because you can access a bunch of major roadways fairly quickly (50, 28, 66, Toll Rd). If I was going to move out to Loudoun I think I would just go out to Leesburg. I like that there’s a real town feel and it’s prettier than Ashburn.

Yes, there's one neighborhood zoned to Crossfield that is in Reston and they go to South Lakes. Everyone else goes to Oakton.

No one from Fox Mill wanted to move from Oakton, I am not sure why anyone would create a split feeder at Crossfield during that time. I wasn’t aware that it was there.

Two words: Stu Gibson

Many parents in that neighborhood wanted to remain with most of Crossfield students at Oakton. A few wanted to go to South Lakes. It split friendships.

I don't think anyone from Crossfields goes to South Lakes. Fox Mill and some from Floris go to South Lakes.

There is a neighborhood right next to Crossfield that goes to South Lakes. In the redistricting, that neighborhood was split over what they wanted. Neighbor against neighbor. It was ugly.

They call Trailside “jailside”. It’s a horribly run school.

We debated Herndon vs Ashburn when we originally moved to the area and chose Herndon, largely because the commute to anything from Ashburn is horrific. Even if your work commute isn't an issue, consider the things you enjoy doing. We enjoy DC and Alexandria and go in regularly, for example - living in Ashburn would make that significantly more onerous.

Do you mean the effort to examine and possibly change boundaries every 5 years w/in FCPS?

Does all of Trailside feed to Stone Bridge? Carson MS sends kids to four high schools - Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield - and it’s very large and, some would say, dominated by its AAP program.

There are many neighborhoods in Fairfax that have more compact boundaries than the Oakton one. However, I assume you are looking in the Franklin Farm area and it is a very nice neighborhood. Carson and Crossfield are relatively close.

We are considering a couple of neighborhoods in both Herndon and Ashburn. I'm trying to get a feel for the differences in the schools.

For example, let's take the Crossfield-Carson-Oakton pyramid vs. Sanders-Trailside-Stone Bridge.

It seems like the Loudon schools are a bit smaller and sometimes closer to students' homes. What are some other differences?
