It depends on the school and how many girls play. There are really good jv teams and there are jv teams that look like rec teams depending on the school

JV teams we’ve played (mcps) have not been good, some with girls who look like they’ve only been playing for a year or so. These are schools with 2500+ kids. Some of these schools have pretty strong varsity teams, but the drop off after the varsity 14 or 15 is huge.

For privates, the schools on the top recruit. Unless your kids is outstanding, the best they can hope for as a non-recruited player is JV through junior year and then end of the varsity bench as a senior

Some privates are elite (best in the area) while others are not competitive.

Name the MCPS public high school and we can give you a better assessment. JV is relatively easy to make. Varsity may be easy to make or difficult depending on school. For the better schools, a core group of the varsity players are playing year round AAU in high school and the other players are decently athletic.

But there are some MCPS girls teams that barely field a varsity team.

Not OP but following bc DD sounds similar. Definitely getting the sense that HS girls basketball is meh (or at least anyone with any type of playing experience can make JV) which is really surprising to me given the level of play we’ve experienced playing club. Maybe girls choose not to play for their school??? DD also didn’t make her MS team in 7th so maybe we just need to convince her to try again next year, continue playing club and then she’ll be fine for HS (large MCPS).

Look at the Washington Post rankings of HS basketball teams. That will give you the list of which public and private schools have the most competitive teams.

Same. Girls basketball isn’t that popular at our HS for whatever reason. Some girls may be cut by junior year or not make varsity (not sure) but pretty much everyone makes the freshman & JV teams. Some don’t see a lot of playing time however. Huge suburban public high school. Some of the other girls sports teams are extremely difficult to make (even the freshman teams)- volleyball, for example.

Oh wow. That’s really surprising given competition we saw this year to make the MS team. I think they ended up taking 14 or 15 but had 40+ girls come out.

Dd in 7th and just trying to understand the landscape of HS basketball programs. Interested in hearing about MD public and private V and JV. DD is at mcps public and didn’t make the final cut for school team despite being a strong player. Just too many girls came out and it sounds like coaches prioritized 8th graders (which I understand). We’ve been talking about going private for HS and her ability to play basketball is one of many factors in that decision.
