For everyone else living with reality-based risk assessment, the odds are much higher that the car will get into an accident and the seat belt will save you, vs. the driver being a murderer.
I've had more than one Uber/cab driver tell me when I asked if they wanted to put on their seatbelt that they purposely don't wear one in case a passenger tries to rob them. The cab driver said that was more prevalent in the olden days before people paid with credit cards and he had wads of cash, but still ...
