You weren’t invited to the wedding and this person is a current direct report, so I would not give anything too personal or anything of significant value.

A gift card to Amazon or maybe Williams Sonoma in a smaller value than an attendee would give seems appropriate.

Do you know her well? If so, then you know her style and what she might want.

If not, go for something practical. At my office, people often give practical gift cards like target/home depot especially if the person is moving. Those are very much appreciated. Or something fun like a gift card from her favorite clothing store.

A gift card to her favorite clothing store isn't really an appropriate gift for a wedding. The wedding gift should be for the couple.

true but then again neither is about 95% of the stuff on a wedding registry.

Under any circumstances (unless maybe if you work in fashion? ) it feels kind of weird for a boss to give a direct report a clothing gift card.

A heartfelt card and something small like a plant just to show you care.

I disliked people giving me a gift that weren't invited to the wedding. It almost felt like this "well I thought we were close so I bought you a wedding gift but I guess you don't consider us that close since you didn't invite me".

She does not view you as a mentor if you are not invited.
