If you are on a budget and want convenience, there are actually a couple of decent hotels easy walking distance from the Nice airport and very close to a tram stop. There is a Crown Plaza and a Radisson.

We're flying out of Nice in April and are looking for somewhere cool to stay in the Nice area. It'll be cooler so wasn't sure if we should try for the coast (Antibes?) or may be go up in the hills? Any advice would be so helpful.
