Recently stayed at the Thompson Central Park (next to Carnegie Hall) and found it to be a great spot for me and my young child. Very fast elevators, super convenient location - easy walk to Columbus Circle, Central Park, 5th Ave, Rockefeller Center, etc. Also multiple subway lines within 3 blocks, which makes it easy to get downtown, UES, UWS.

I got it using points, which I found to be a very good value over paying cash.

Activities will be all over: tenement museum, Natural history museum, MET, Chinatown, Morgan library, High Line...

All of the rooms are cramped in NYC, lol.

I always stay at the Empire Hotel because it is basically across the street from Lincoln Center and I like to go to the opera when in NY. Very reasonable prices. It's a boutique hotel so no amenities like room service/pool/etc. But, again, in my mind it's affordable for NYC.

Any experience with the Lex Hotel at 67 Lexington Avenue ?

We just stayed at Hotel Belleclaire on the UES over the holidays and had a nice experience. Rooms were small but updated; I believe they have suites. Easy access to subway, Central Park, food options (incl. Levain and Zabars). We walked past the Museum of the City of New York and it looked like it had some interesting exhibits (NYC Pets caught my DD's eye); the Alvin Ailey exhibit at the Whitney (Chelsea) also looks really cool and is near High Line, Chelsea Market, and/or City Island if you've never explored any of those.

Our friends stay there when they come to see their DD at Barnard, and they rave about it. It's on a quiet side street, and you have easy walkable access to two parks, the subway, and lots of restaurants.

I lost something in front of the hotel and had to work with the staff to get it returned to me, so I talked to maybe seven staff members. Every single one of them was incredibly nice. Made me want to stay there.

All rooms in NYC will be relatively cramped. it's the nature of the beast.

We just stayed at Park Central Hotel on 7th Ave - it was very nice/large rooms. Only issue was sometimes one of the elevators wasn't working.

What part of town?

Any hotels you'd recommend that are very safe, sort of nice and not cramped rooms? And how about cool restaurants or activities beyond the obvious (used to go often but have not in many years!)? Bonus of appealing to older teens.
