Because some years we really don’t get snow and people would rather start the school year later and end the school year earlier rather than adding many extra days “just in case.” Think of it like health insurance. You can pay a lower premium and get a high deductible plan, knowing that you’ll pay less overall if you don’t need the healthcare and if you do, you’ll just pay for it out of pocket (and you’re covered for something catastrophic). Versus a plan where you pay a higher premium upfront “just in case” but you may not have a “just in case” so you’re out the extra money.

I am new here (MCPS), but I don't understand why they only budgeted for 1-2 snow days when, clearly, the closures are not a new phenomenon. I'm genuinely trying to understand why they don't build in the number of snow days they actually average per year. What am I missing?

Oh, that is too bad. I already sign up my kids with summer camp starting on June 16th. I see there could be some snow tomorrow afternoon. I hope school eithetr open on time or delayed opening tomorrow wedneaday.
