My kid switched from FCPS advanced math in 4th (theoretically most of the way or maybe even all the way through fifth grade math) to a version of the Singapore curriculum in 5th. Kid was about half a year ahead after being a full year ahead of the Virginia standards.
Because there's a big jump in learning the Singapore math way of doing things, kid struggled at first but once that was mastered has been a little bored.
I don't think any reasonably bright American student wouldn't be able to easily catch up, especially if they are on even a basic gifted track.
