For/from an alcoholic, sure. Otherwise, it's a lazy gift that requires no thought about what the recipient likes or who they are beyond "a person who drinks". If that's not your identity, the point stands.

We all now know without doubt that alcohol shortens your life. So yes, if you hope someone dies sooner rather than later, definitely gift them some good alcohol.

I don't drink, and I think it's weird that everyone assumes this is a great gift, but I just accept it and pass it on to someone who wants it.

Look, I'm all for examining health patterns, I rarely drink, and I'm the kind of person who has a big glass of water on the very rare occasion I have a second glass of wine, but no, the Surgeon General's warning should not affect something like that.

in the 70s, my mom used to give certain family members a carton of cigarettes as holiday or birthday gifts. Then, her brother died of oral cancer. It was a horrible death.

It was an easy souvenir and host gift, but I probably will stop gifting alcohol. Especially to my adult children.

I’m not ready to stop serving it to guests, though. And that makes me feel hypocritical.

I don't drink, so I don't give alcohol as a gift. But I do give plenty of high-fat or high-sugar gifts, which can be considered poison too.
