You are setting up your kid for exasperation--doing something absurd and expecting them not to see it as absurd but instead considering impolite. It is not fair to them.

Maybe a bit of both? My dad was fond of "let's blow this cake stand" and "how's tricks?" They felt so silly to say as a kid that I was literally making fun of him and cracking myself up at the same time. Now that he's gone. I occasionally say them, think of him, and smile.

I would watch out. Although your sayings are quirky and cute, they are definitely not current slang words often used by youths. You might want to talk to her before it becomes out hand.

My problem is a grave one. I have a unique and pretty cool (at least I think so) way of speaking. I use a lot of sayings like “let’s blow this popsicle stand” and “you’re barking up the wrong tree”. I understand that even though these sayings are clever and fun, they’re not really popular with kids these days. That’s why I was so surprised when DD (15 y/o) began to use these kind of phrases. At first it was just in casual family conversation and I felt so honored, like she was paying tribute to me. But then I heard her using it with her friends, and when she did that, she was doing a silly voice and they were laughing. So what do you folks think is going on? Should I feel honored … or hurt?
