When scheduling long haul Intl flights, I never allow less than 2 hrs layover at the gateway airport before the International departure. If I can, I allow 3 hours layover.

A widebody International flight usually boards about 45-50 minutes before scheduled push back from the gate.

AA is neither better than worse at this than the other major US airlines.

What matters much more is (a) the route and (b) the frequency of flights. Here are 2 contrived examples:

If the route is NYC - London, there are lots of daily flights, so there is a good chance of being accommodated later that day.

If the route only has 1-2 flights per day, much less likely to be accommodated later that day.

Where is your connection and how long is it? I won't book an int'l flight with a tight connection anymore. I've been burned more often than not.

+1. We flew AA this summer. We missed our connection due to their own aircraft mismanagement and couldn’t get another connecting flight until the next day. They rebooked us and paid for hotel and food but it totally sucked.

If your connecting flight is also American, IME they auto-rebook. But I avoid connections of less than 2 hours if at all possible.

Have not flown on American Airlines in a long time. If my connection is tight and my plane is delayed are they good about rebooking?
