The current DL can likely be in leau of a lot of the other documentation - like SS card and birth certificate. But you’ll still need to complete the paperwork.

yes you can -- at least for a year. DH just did last week when his new license was in the mail. The TSA agent commented that he needed to renew his license.

Sometimes it will be accepted, sometimes not. TSA, for instance, lets you use an expired license for only one year after the expiration date. Other places might stop immediately or after 6 months.

It's in your best interest to have at least one current government-issued photo id.

I'm OP. I do trust that mom will not drive; it's just that at in DC after a certain age (75?) you need jump through additional hoops to renew a DL and I thought getting her a non-driver's ID might be the path of least resistance. I'm not sure a doctor would sign off on her ability to drive at this point. And while I doubt she will ever travel by air again, I can't guarantee she won't, so I'd like to have a TSA-compliant ID for her. Passport might be easier...but there are also some circumstances in which a DC-issued ID will prove DC residency and could be handy.

You can only use it for TSA for one year after it expires.

My mom is ready to give up driving voluntarily (hallelujah!).

Her driver's license expires fairly soon, and it doesn't make sense to get all the medical and ophthalmic paperwork that would be required to renew it if she's not going to drive anymore. Her DL is a real ID one; she jumped through all the documentation hoops last time she renewed.

Has anybody replaced a real ID DL with a real ID non-driver's license? Can you do this without redoing all the real ID nonsense? She is in DC, and I couldn't find details about this on the DC DMV website; they address a lot of scenarios, but not giving up a DL for a non-DL.
