OP here. I wasn’t sure I should get detailed in the post, but—warning—it doesn’t look like it was a peaceful death, according to my DH. I emphasize “really bad shape”.
I know. But the quote is what you tell the owner. And I forgot to mention that yes, you bury it, and let them know you're fine with them digging their beloved pet back up to rebury somewhere else. The burial will hasten decomposition and hopefully hide any signs of violent death. Most people, OP, when a corpse is far gone, cannot tell at all how the deceased met their end. What looks like a violent death could just have been decomposition and little critters disturbing the remains. And vice versa: some violent deaths are surprisingly clean-looking (spine snapped, for example).
