The Adirondacks are not on the way to any ski area in VT.

There is nothing remotely fun to stop at on OPs direct path. The Adirondacks are the only place I would detour off to.

You could go the way through Hartford. Not that you'd want to stop there. It isn't a long drive, and there is nothing really interesting in between (we did detour to West Point but DS was 15 and wanted to see it.)

American Dream and Legoland are the only things that come to mind, and Legoland’s winter hours are probably pretty limited. I’d just pick a random hotel with a pool somewhere in northern NJ and plan to get an early start the next morning.

+1 Wake up in VT. Good ski days are few and unpredictable. Wouldn't want to miss any.

If it's bad you can just chill in a pretty place. (Although valleys in VT are very ugly right now...)

We drive straight there. It’s only 7 hours and maybe 20min minutes for us, leave in the morning, eat lunch and arrive by afternoon.

Driving to Okemo soon and looking to split the drive with a stay somewhere along the way. Kids are aged 12-7.

Any ideas? We can just get a hotel along 95, but there must be a fun town with stuff to do along the way. Not willing to deal with NYC.
