And that's when it's fresh. It doesn't stay fresh forever.

I had to use a Keurig recently and couldn’t believe how terrible it was. Probably also these particular coffee grounds were low quality. A French press will probably be most space efficient. If you’re up for learning how to use it, a Chemex makes great coffee and could also be used as a water pitcher, etc.

There are apparently some decent quality instant coffees these days. Get one that comes in single-serve packets.

When you need coffee for guests, is it for a large number of people or just one or two? French press is great for small batches, a drip coffee maker is better for lots of people.

The coffee tastes disgusting and is never hot enough. You also end up with gross water in the tank that needs to be "burped" out regularly. The system introduces more heated plastic to the beverages than any other system.

A French press is the best idea just learn how to use it so you can show your guests who've never used one how to use it.

This is OP - I don’t like the waste of a Keurig. But maybe I’ll consider it since we won’t be using it so often.

I was going to suggest this too.

French press was my thought as well. Can also be used for loose leaf teas.

Also coffee can be stored in the freezer if you have extra between visits.

DH and I do not drink coffee, no one in our household does. We get many guests/visitors who do. We have a Keurig because we would never be able to keep anything else fresh and as a result would be frequently buying and wasting coffee. I know you did say no Keurig, but just thought I’d mention a reason we went that route.

We have an older version of this--DH is the only one who drinks coffee in our house and usually just has one before he leaves for work so this works well for that.

DH and I don’t generally drink coffee but I’d like to buy a coffee maker to use once in a while or for guests. Something relatively easy to use. Any suggestions? Not a Keurig.
