I do freelance copy editing for a magazine. My background is in journalism, though. As with many jobs, I got this because I knew someone, but I’ve seen some listed on LinkedIn and Indeed. As PP mentioned, you’ll need familiarity with the style guide being used, such as AP for many consumer publications and websites or Chicago for more academic editing.

I’m not in law, but hire copy editors frequently for a nonprofit in a different field. I will say there are a ton of freelance editors. when our pool has dried up and we put out a call for more, we get a ton of resumes. So I would think there’s a lot of competition for the work. You need to be able to say that you’re familiar with a specific style guide. We pay around $50 an hour, maybe it would be more in law

Lawyer/writer here. There is probably a good stream of this work, but I haven't found it and I don't think it pays very well. I've had more luck finding weird writing/editing gigs (such as editing the personal statements of int'l med grads seeking residency, which I found on a random Indeed search, and writing synopses of self-help books for scribd which I found on Binders several years ago).

Any thoughts or experience with copy editing as a side hustle? I’m a government lawyer and write/edit for a living. Looking for extra freelance work I can get.
