Um, no. It’s completely fair.

Permissive attitudes like this is why we have rampant glade inflation and then parents come and complain that their “high GPA” child got rejected from his top choices.

I agree that a lot of us have been there but to me it seems surprising to see this for the first time in 10th grade.

For us it was important to figure out why things didn’t get turned in - forgetting, not knowing the process in a particular class , whatever. Then you can make a make a plan for moving forward.

No it's fair. You need to do the minimum to get the grade. If you don't turn in the work, you earned a zero. Is the teacher a mind reader?

Yes, a lot of us have been there….

A lot of times it is just a responsibility or time management issue/lack of follow through. Almost as if they get behind and then struggle with how to ask for help or “right” themselves again. Also at our HS, the whole “I turned it in, but the teacher hasn’t graded it yet” actually IS totally valid at times, which is understandable but exasperating as a parent in terms of keeping track/identifying problems early. My kids have had a few teachers who saved up work over weeks and then graded it all at once.

My DS is currently a sophomore and had a great fall semester but was like this spring semester of freshman year (after having a great fall freshman semester). In his case, it was a spring sport that he was struggling to balance with schoolwork and I trusted him/lost track and didn’t catch it early enough. He ended up with two C’s (due mostly to organization and not turning things in) and I was definitely not thrilled.

Overall, it was a learning experience. He learned it was way easier to keep on top of work from day 1 rather than try to play catch up. I kept a much closer eye on things this fall semester as well.

He did the work for all his subjects but didn’t turn it in for this particular class. That doesn’t make any sense.

I think a good 75+% of parents can relate. It's not the end of the world. Really. My kid got Cs and probably a D or so in HS.

My ds failed a class this fall semester because he did not turn in work. He got an A the first quarter in that class and in all of his other classes. He completely cratered in the middle of the 2nd quarter in most classes but managed to turn it around/get things turned in except in 1 class. He ended up with a mix of As and Bs...and an F.

I was watching his grades/missing work almost daily in the portal to make sure missing things were being graded. He even showed me some of the missing work in the class he failed but said the teacher was not putting the grades in yet. Turns out he never turned it in when he said/thought he did. He is my youngest of 3 and the olders never had this issue or anything close to it. This last one is just...very laid back. I want to kick myself for not emailing the teacher that last week to double check things, but I mean he is a sophomore in high school! I thought about it but did not do it. This will hurt his UW GPA the most as he can take an additional social studies to cancel out this semester for the W GPA, but it is such an enforced error.

Needless to say I will be on him like a hawk with any hint of late/missing work this semester. He should be able to get all A+s if he just turns the stupid work in! Can anyone relate?
