Which schools? I only know of one that recalculates

NP. It varies by selectivity. The more selective the college, the more likely that they recalculate GPAs their own way.

Among publics, for example, UCs recalculate, CU Boulder doesn't.

Michigan does this too.

Asking because there seems to be a lot of inconsistency in which classes are weighted, if any, based on specific school and district. Ours doesn’t weight any honors classes. Only AP classes. Plus we don’t have fluff AP classes like AP precalc (since when did precalc become AP??).

I believe that if you search for Holy Cross admissions on youtube you will find a video where they show you the exact screen that an admissions officer would see when evaluating applications. They also explain how that software is programmed to take into account different grading scales.

This., so those ridiculous 4.8 MoCo gpas become something much lower.

I would focus on having the best unweighted core GPA possible, which I think is what matters most. Weighted GPAs are totally unreliable for lots of reasons.

+1 and I would add high rigor, however that is defined at your child’s high school.

Interesting. Did not know about UCs.

UC has a very specific way of recalculating, using 10th and 11th grade only. Out of state, only AP and dual enrollment courses get a weight. See https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/ and also check out the high school-specific data at https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/admissions-source-school

My kids applied to colleges this year and were asked for transcripts showing their 9th-12th grade classes and their unweighted GPA, or that the counselor's office could confirm the unweighted GPA

This. The more selective, the more likely to recalculate. VCU auto-admit and WVU merit both use the GPA printed on the transcript. The Iowa formula uses the transcript GPA. Michigan recomputes.

Omg. This is like asking do colleges consider full pay status and how much weight do they put on it. So much variance it's almost not even worth discussing generalities. That said, many schools say they look at course rigor and individual grades more than GPAs.
