Both Mazda and Subaru tend to be reliable vehicle manufacturers, and we eventually selected a Mazda CX-5 over a Subaru Crosstrek. We've enjoyed the CX-5 and it is an easy vehicle to maintain, and very reliable. I'd wager that the CX-30 is a good vehicle too.

Yeah, I realize that.

The first one spoiled me. A 1999 Outback wagon that went 230k miles, was built like a brick s-house, and was still running 100% when we traded it.

Didn’t have one for about a decade, then got a 2004 Forester in 2009. Within a year it was leaking oil out both cylinder heads. So much oil leaking it was fouling the plugs and misfiring.

Junked that one and got a 2013 Crosstrek. Needed to replace several wheel hubs and both front axles and the transmission was acting up when we traded it in for a 2018 Forester.

The Forester was great until it hit 70k miles, and the transmission started having problems.


The only good one we had was the first one. I admit it, I got taken. I bought into all the advertising BS.

One comment on the crosstrek. I personally can’t stand the low head liner / low windshield.

It’s a compact interior and when your used to driving suvs and even sedans with a nice full field of view, the closed in feeling was a no go.

I will saw the crosstrek does seem to be the new cross over choice for the elderly. I’ve seen more and more on the road now with old folks driving them.

Do you mean the CX30 or CX50? Thought the latter is the Crosstrek competitor?

Also, I have an Outback and love it. No complaints and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Subaru.

Try the back seats of both. Make sure they work for whatever you need. The CX30 is tiny in the back- but I've never checked out the Crosstrek so it could be the same.

If unsatisfied with the result, then flip it again.

Mazda should be cheaper as it is one of the cheapest cars to fix. Its legroom is small. Works fine for us as I'm almost always alone or with one person max.
I also drive mostly in the city and Crosstrek seems like a waste or overkill.
What about insurance?
Overbuying and overpaying bothers me, so I went for CX-30.What about the new CX-5?

Trying to decide between these two! Prices are similar. We have a Subaru Forster and like it, but have heard great things about Mazdas. Any advice?
