Corner ties are important. If you don’t have them, add them. Additionally, about 1X/week, stand at one side and shake the duvet to even out the poofy parts. This is the norm for a duvet cover. When you see duvet covers made up on a beautiful bed at Pottery Barn, remember that no one is sleeping on these beds. This is the nature of the beast. If adjustments are not for you, buy a comforter.

Because you didn't look at the dimensions when you bought them - many companies (even within a singular brand) sell inserts and covers made by different manufacturers so they are not the same size. The smartest thing to do is buy an insert that is larger than the cover.

I have heard this advice and it seems sound.
I still hate the whole duvet cover routine, though. I prefer to use a comforter in a nice color and just wash the whole thing.

OP here. Yes, mine too -- mine is from Brooklinen and it has the same feature. However, while the corners technically stay put, the sides of the duvet pull away from the edges of the cover everywhere else. If there were ties all along all of the edges that might solve my problem, as the corner ties aren't enough.

We get ours from The company store and you tie the corners inside the duvet cover to the duvet (there are loops) so it stays put.

YES thank you for bringing this up, ill-fitting duvet covers are one of my favorite gripe topics.
The answer is bedding companies are making linens way too big on purpose, because it's cheaper to have linens that are too baggy than ones that are too small (and subsequently have people return them). Hence we all are sleeping on terribly rumpled bottom sheets.
A good duvet cover should be the same size or smaller than the duvet insert. This keeps the duvet nice and puffy. You should not need ties to keep it in place, that's unnecessary if the duvet fits nice and tight. You shouldn't even need buttons on the duvet cover, frankly.
To wit: I recently purchased two double duvets for my king size bed. Do you know how hard it is to find a duvet cover in the double size? The stores only sell twin size, then double/queen, then king. Well. I tried the double/queen and my duvet flattened like a pancake. Heck I tried my old queen-sized comforter in the cover and it was absolutely swimming in it, too. Just horrid! I ended up going with a twin duvet cover for my double-bed-sized duvets, which worked great and I sleep under a puffy cloud every night. But I literally had to outsmart Big Linen to do so. grrrrrr.

I had the same issue, and realized that my king duvet and cover were not perfectly square. I had to rotate it 90 degrees to fit, because one side was slightly longer. Now I know the tag corner always fits in the upper right corner.

Title says it all. I have a duvet cover and duvet. They're the same size, from the same company. it's CONSTANTLY all lumpy and bunched up, with no actual duvet along the sides of the cover even though I've tied the corners in. It doesn't matter how much I shake it out and/or try to redistribute it by hand - it constantly looks sloppy. It is like the duvet is inappropriately sized for the cover, but they are the same size and are the same measurements.
