When I was last in Canada, I went sightseeing at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. I was amused and intrigued to learn that Otzi the European prehistoric ice mummy's shoes were made out of leather and bark and grass and yet they actually work very well according to modern researchers.

I borrowed my friends while out of town when it was much colder than expected. My friend went on and on about how it would keep me so much warmer than the jacket I brought with me. I was still cold and it made no substantial difference.
