BTDT. They called it "Japanese straightening" back in the day, and it was basically a reverse perm. It sounds great in theory, but after you grow an inch or two of hair after the treatment, things get awkward. It's hard to grow out because you end up with poofy hair on top that can't be treated until it grows out a few inches. Also, treating the new growth becomes a little fraught because you can't re-treat the already-permed hair or it will break off.

keratin is different now - no formaldehyde. and depending on your texture, you can just do express keratin and that's gentler on your hair but will still last 3 months or so. but really it's all about finding the right stylist who can properly match the level you need and apply it correctly.

op here. I actually have it. it doesn’t work great for me. Or more specifically, doesn’t work any better than any other straightener I have. Also, it’s obviously not permanent. Looking for more long term options.

I believe the only truly permanent option is Japanese straightening. My hair is fine and I worry about damage from Japanese straightening so I do keratin 2x year.

So my hair is naturally curly/wavy. I love it straight and straighten it when going out/have a work event etc…but not every day. I did Keratin once about 15 years ago and loved it-lasted about 4 months for me.

I know there are lots of new things in the chemically straightening world but I have also heard a lot about people’s hair falling out and other extreme consequences.

So if you have had something done to straighten your hair effectively and without issue please tell me what it was, about how much it cost and how long it lasted. And where in the DMV you had it done. Thanks!!!
