I dont think they drop their friends. I think they don’t see them in the same class anymore.

In high school, there is more of a divide between academically motivated kids and not. It doesn’t matter about AAP at all in high school. A kid who wasn’t in AAP can take all the same honors and AP classes and do well. I wish fcps didn’t separate kids into AAP in 3rd or make it more fluid.

I feel like the school does get separated.

I have two older kids and they basically only hung out with kids in AAP because all their classes were with those same people for 4 years in elementary.

My current second grader only hangs out with kids in her current class and seems to be drifting apart from kids she was close with last year in the same class.

They really don't though. After 3rd grade, they stop talking to non-AAP kids. They definitely don't eat lunch together, each class is assigned a set of tables.

20 years ago in FCPS and we definitely knew. I remember walking in the hall and the gen ed classes calling us Garbage and Trash (GT). I hope it's not as bad now. We were definitely very separate from the rest of the school.

I sub in FCPS and I've been in several elementary schools. Every single school that I've been, the children are assigned lunch tables by class. The children are allowed to pick which table they sit at as long as it's their class table. They can not sit at any table in the cafeteria so a child in an AAP class is not allowed to sit with a child in a GE class, unless it is pre-arranged by the teachers.

Right? Reading through some of the messages on this forum is making me reconsider whether I would even send my daughter if she is selected. She already had a friend this week telling the other kids at lunch she probably wouldn’t be at their school next year because she’d be going to the ‘smart school.’ My daughter asked what she meant because I haven’t even mentioned any of this to her. I had to explain to her that it’s just going to a school for more challenging work in some areas.

Hate to break it to some of you, but if your child is that smart they’ll be fine no matter where they end up, it’s Fairfax County. And short of the Ivy Leagues, personality and people skills often get people farther in the real world than advanced classes at seven years old. The toxicity and life or death mentality displayed on here by some (not all, but some) is truly concerning.

Our base is a center school. The kids know there are aap and not aap classes but they don't seem to dwell on it. The friend groups did get rearranged but I dont think it was "ew you're in gen ed I'm not going to play with you"...it was more just a function of those kids having a different teacher and making new friends in the class this year. My (aap) son plays sports at recess this year as a function of meeting these new kids while his (gen ed) buddies from last year don't want to for example. I also say that it has nothing to do with aap status because neighborhood gen ed kids on the bus are still cool.

Judging from how the parents on this forum talk, the kids not only know but they also likely inherent their parents' snobbery.

Yes...and the kids who aren't level 4 but base school is a center constantly get asked why they're not level 4...

How does that impact social relationships. Moving from a district that has only one gifted program so this is really confusing.
