Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes comic collections
Hidden Talents by David Lubar
Holes
The Westing Game
How to Eat Fried Worms
I haven’t read these or if I did it was long ago, so I don’t know if these are appropriate for a 12 yo, but you might look at:
Terry Brooks - Landover series
Terry Pratchett - Discworld series
Douglas Adams - Hitchiker’s Guide series
A neighbor boy loved the Eragon series when he was that age. Again, I haven’t read it, so I can’t comment on appropriateness. I also think they’re not so much fun as dramatic and dark.
If you’re okay with dark and dramatic, Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising series is good.
Calvin & Hobbes contributed to my son’s large vocabulary starting in elementary school. FoxTrot was a close second.
