Asia is humongous so there is a huge array of diverse customs. People are conditioned to worship their parents and most parents do sacrifice their lives trying to give kids a good upbringing for a better future. Its only normal that kids want to or feel obligated to repay parents in different ways.

However, Asian-Americans are a different breed. Most kids get Americanized and only feel resentment towards their parents so less likely to give big gifts but others do their best but usually within their budget, as Asian-American parents are frugal and wouldn't approve of kids busting their budgets to buy fancy gifts. They do feel immense pride in it and wouldn't flaunt those gifts as parent of the year awards.

I'm asian and I can confirm this is a real thing. It's cultural though. The expectation is there.

So interesting, had no idea this was a thing. I guess I'm from the opposite end of the spectrum culturally, my mother would be horrified if I spent that lavishly on something for her. We only gift "down" with bigger gifts and that's regardless of if the "kids" make good money or not.

My kids have been getting me actual birthday, mother's day and Christmas presents on their own for about 2-3 years. Oldest is 21 and a college senior. They even send flowers some years. It's totally the 21 and 20 year olds (girls) that organize it. They sign the 15 year old's name.

Yes, technically they're not buying it since they don't have jobs but they do all the work in thinking about and buying the gifts.

My 7 yo spent weeks writing and revising a poem for me last Christmas about what Christmas means to her. It's two pages and absolutely beautiful.

I'm not Asian, but I am Hispanic. so yes, my kids will buy us (parents) something once they get "real" jobs, they're still in College.

I started to buy my parents things in my mid twenties.... Not a over the top designer purse though. LOL.

My DD is graduating college this year and there’s a present under the tree for me! So excited! First time ever. It is from a designer store. I haven’t peeked. I am Asian as well. But it’s not an expectation in our country/culture.

My 4YO convinced a store owner that his mom "has to have that ring" (it was a toy ring), and she gave to him. The little guy wrapped it and everything.

My kids have always been gift givers, so as soon as they had money of their own, from Grandma's birthday card, etc., they started giving gifts. Never random, always thoughtful things they believe the person will like.

I have one pair of thick fuzzy socks that have penguins on them from DD. Probably was given those about a decade ago but still wear them when I'm cold. She gave me a gel face mask for when I get migraines that I also still use. She is poor - she doesn't need to spend money on me.

Obviously your kids will not do this since it seems they are not very asian (culturally) and have no idea this is a thing.

They made gifts in preschool for us. Then after that starting around kindergarten, DH and I took them separately to the mall to get something for the other. Somewhere in upper ES, we gave them some money (eg $50) to buy gifts for the people on their list and dropped them off at the mall for the morning- meeting back together at lunch. When they started earning their own money in high school, they spent their own money.
