If you are a Texas resident and you are like top 5% in your class (is that it), isn't that how UT Austin works as well?

They are also nationally "known" but for what, beyond this policy, is anyone's guess.

I define "nationally known" that if you show up to any job interview with basically anyone at the company, nobody has to spend 5 minutes asking you to explain where the college you attended is located or really what it is. Everyone knows what the University of Alabama is (honestly, everyone will also basically know what the University of Wyoming is as well...though if you are originally from say CA, they will wonder why you attended perhaps).

Purdue requires test scores and seems to accept basically any kid in the 25-75 percentile range at our school despite lower GPAs.

A list of schools requiring more than test and gpa would be shorter

Alabama. The high scores are tied in with their generous merit aid and an effort to improve their profile.

They are also nationally "known" but for what, beyond this policy, is anyone's guess.

We do...OP said nationally known, not specifically top ranked.

The Big10 schools above are nationally known...as are schools like LSU, Alabama, University of Mississippi...again, they basically just care about grades/test scores.

The UK and European countries do this.

This is not our style in America.

CalTech has a reputation for focusing on test scores, grades, and related honors.

But do you mean a Russian-style first-past-the-post system where the top 500 kids get into MGIMO, the next 500 get into MGU, etc?

No, we don't have that here.

There are tons of them...what an odd question.

Look at any nationally known university with 70%+ acceptance rate and basically that is how they accept you:

- Indiana
- Michigan State
- Iowa
- Iowa State
- Nebraska

The list can go on-and-on. Like hundreds.

UCLA and Berkeley are going to be tough because test-blind and they only give a GPA bump to AP (maybe IB) grades OOS.

There is not, you have to go to Canada or UK for that.

and maybe GPA, but mostly test scores?

like if you get a 1550 and a 3.95 and have zero ecs, can you get into .. say , UCLA?
