I have a student with a low grade due to poorly done work. He races through everything. He never bothers with redos, but his parents keep asking me to reconsider his grades. I did regrade a few papers in case I missed something. I also had a colleague double check my work. Nothing got an higher score and in one case, his grade should have been lower. I didn’t change his grade. Instead I suggested he redo the work this week. His father told me “We teach Junior to never second guess himself”.

I’m supposed to second guess myself, but the 12 year old should not.

“Then the grade will stand at a C. Junior will need to redo the work if you want his grade to be higher.”

Sounds like the parent will be proud of the grade Junior earned.

Great. Another clown will be frequently wrong but rarely in doubt.

Wow. So the kid has undiagnosed ADHD and the parents are doubling down on his symptoms. Poor kid. Maybe at the end of the year, you could suggest that his impulsivity and lack of attention raises some red flags and he might benefit from a professional evaluation. Those are the words teachers typically use when they mean "get your damm kid treated for his ADHD". They said that to me, for my son with ADHD. Thank goodness I listened.

Ugh, that’s rather bonkers feedback from the parents. Sounds like it’s time for firm boundaries and a hand-off to an administrator.

I assume your principal will back up the poor grades that Junior so, so badly deserves?

Interims are this week in my school district. This week, I’m allowing students to revise a few assignments. Not all of them take advantage of redos, but my district doesn’t allow extra credit.
