My 8th grader is the one who suggested offering high school science in middle school. DC has complained about how easy science is in the 7th/8th AAP science classes. I'm not trying to push kids who are learning at a normal pace, I just think it would be nice if extremely advanced students had more options for advancement through FCPS. I realize we can do enrichment through outside classes, but DC plays sports, an instrument, is involved in clubs at school, and wants to hang out with friends, not take extra classes outside of school.

Why do people get so bent out of shape by the suggestion of increasing the level of academics available in FCPS?

Nope. Like others, I support more rigor in elementary school. But I see no need to accelerate more for middle and high school. Kids are stressed enough. It doesn’t need to start earlier in yet another subject.

Is this being discussed somewhere or just OP’s idea?

A better idea would be to increase the rigor in middle schools. But introducing more high school classes to 8th graders is a terrible idea. It just pushes more kids to feel like they need to take them - when they don't.

That would work if and only if they actually covered science content in elementary school.

My 7th grade DD is actually learning a ton in Life Science (has a really good teacher) and I think it will set her up well for bio. Hoping for the same from Physical Science. I wouldn't want her going into honors in bio/chem/physics without a middle school base. That said, I think they could provide the same base in 5th & 6th. They just don't.

How many parents would be interested in the option of combining Honors 7th grade/8th grade science into one year of middle school. This would allow students to take Honors Biology in 8th grade and free up space in high school for higher level AP science course, or for any student wanting to find space to take additional electives.

I have children who have taken honors 7th and honors 8th grade science who could have handled those two classes combined into one year as the classes are not particularly hard or fast paced enough for some students.
